460W Solar Power
Start generating your own electricity with a high-efficiency 460W N-type TOPCon solar panel. With 23% module efficiency, Bolt delivers substantial solar generation from a single-panel system. A simple, space-efficient starting point for home plug-in solar.

Plug Into a UK Socket
No dedicated solar inverter or hard-wired solar connection is required for the solar-only kit. Bolt connects to a suitable standard UK household socket using the supplied AC cable.

Start With 460W. Expand to 920W.
Bolt 460W starts with one solar panel, but the included dual-input microinverter gives you room to expand. If you want more solar later, simply add a compatible second panel using the unused independent input.

FAQs

Is the Thunder Bolt 460W ENA compliant?
Yes. Thunder Bolt 460W is officially listed as a compliant Plug-in Solar device on the Energy Networks Association Connect Direct register under reference THUNE/21203/V1.

Is plug-in solar legal in the UK?
Yes. From 27 August 2026, compliant plug-in solar systems can legally connect to suitable standard household sockets in Great Britain under the new UK plug-in solar framework. Bolt 460W is listed as a compliant Plug-in Solar device on the ENA Connect Direct register.

Is the Bolt 460W a good first solar system?
Yes. Bolt 460W is designed as a simple entry point into home plug-in solar. You start with one 460W panel and already have the infrastructure to expand with a compatible second panel later.

Can I add another solar panel later?
Yes. Bolt 460W uses one of the two independent inputs on the Hoymiles HMS-800-2WB microinverter. You can later add a second compatible 460W panel and upgrade to Thunder Bolt 920W, which is separately listed as an ENA-compliant Plug-in Solar system.

What happens to the unused solar input?
Protective MC4 caps are supplied for the unused microinverter connectors, keeping them covered until you decide to expand your system.

Does the Bolt 460W plug into a normal UK socket?
Yes. Bolt 460W is supplied with the required UK AC connection cable and is designed to connect to a suitable standard UK household socket. Extension leads, multi-way adaptors and travel adaptors must not be used.

Where can I install the Bolt 460W?
Bolt works particularly well in gardens and on suitable flat roofs, sheds, outbuildings and rear extension roofs. Wherever it is installed, the panel should be securely positioned and receive good sunlight with minimal shading.

How does the Bolt 460W work?
The solar panel generates DC electricity, which is converted into usable AC electricity by the microinverter. The system then connects to your home through its UK 3-pin plug, allowing the solar electricity to be used by appliances in your home.

Do I need an electrician to install it?
A hard-wired solar installation is not normally required for Bolt 460W. Plug-in solar is designed for consumer installation using a suitable household socket. However, if your consumer unit is old, your circuits are not clearly identifiable, or you are unsure about the condition of your electrical installation, you should have it checked by a qualified electrician before connecting the system.

Need help? Thunder can handle the notification for you

Can I monitor how much solar power I am generating?
Yes. The included smart microinverter has built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and works with the S-Miles Home app, allowing you to view your solar production and system performance from your phone.

Do I still need to notify my DNO?
Yes. Plug-in solar remains grid-connected generation and your Distribution Network Operator must still be notified under the applicable G98 process. This is a notification rather than a traditional solar connection application. Thunder provides the information you need to complete the notification.

How large is the Bolt 460W solar panel?
The panel measures 1762 × 1134 × 30 mm and weighs approximately 21 kg, making Bolt a relatively compact single-panel solar setup.

  • Annual consumption: 2,700 kWh (Ofgem typical medium household). Winter 60% / Summer 40%.

System: 4 x Storm 178W flexible solar panels (TopCon monocrystalline), total 0.71 kWp. Microinverter: Hoymiles HMS-800W-2T (800 VA, 2 MPPT, 96.7% peak efficiency).

Orientation: Modelled at 90-degree vertical mounting (typical for fence or balcony railing). This is a conservative estimate. Tilting panels to a more favourable angle will increase generation.

Year 1 generation: 525 kWh (estimated for London, based on typical balcony/fence mounting).

Panel degradation: 2% in year 1, 0.7%/year thereafter (conservative estimate for flexible ETFE panels).

Seasonal generation split: Winter 28% / Summer 72% (Thames region profile).

Self-consumption rate: 100% year-round. System output is well below household demand, so all generation is consumed on-site.

Electricity tariff: 30 p/kWh peak (average smart time-of-use daytime rate), 7 p/kWh off-peak (overnight rate), 3% annual inflation.

    Battery: Hoymiles HiBattery 1920 AC (HB-1920-AC-SV), 1.92 kWh usable capacity, LiFePO4 cells, AC-coupled, 87% round-trip efficiency, IP66, 6,000+ cycle life, 10-year warranty.

Battery arbitrage: Off-peak grid charging at overnight rates, peak discharge during daytime. 365 days per year at full capacity (1.92 kWh). Solar generation is consumed directly by the household and does not charge the battery, leaving full battery capacity available for grid arbitrage year-round. Battery operates at 800W maximum output, sufficient to offset household base load during peak hours.
    87% round-trip efficiency.

Battery arbitrage savings assume the customer is on a smart time-of-use tariff with off-peak overnight rates. Actual returns may be higher or lower than projected
depending on tariff availability and usage patterns. All figures are estimates based on the assumptions above and should not be considered as guaranteed
returns.

  • System: 1 x Bolt 400W rigid solar panel (monocrystalline TOPCon), total 0.40 kWp. Microinverter: Hoymiles HMS-800-2WB (800 VA, 2 MPPT, 96.7% peak efficiency).

Orientation: Modelled at 40-degree tilt, azimuth -6 degrees (near due south), the optimal configuration for London. A ground, wall or balcony frame allows this angle to be set. Output will be lower at other orientations.

Specific yield: 1,122 kWh/kWp/year (PVGIS simulation for London at 40-degree tilt, azimuth -6 degrees, less a 3% allowance for soiling and real-world inverter efficiency).

    Year 1 generation: 445 kWh.

Panel degradation: 1% in year 1, 0.4%/year thereafter (standard N-type TOPCon performance warranty).

Seasonal generation split: Winter 33% / Summer 67% (derived from PVGIS monthly output at 40-degree tilt for London).

Self-consumption rate: 100% year-round (blended 100%). System output stays below household demand and the battery absorbs any short-term surplus, so all generation is consumed on site.

Annual consumption: 2,700 kWh (Ofgem typical medium household). Winter 60% / Summer 40%.

    Electricity tariff: 30 p/kWh peak (smart time-of-use daytime rate), 8 p/kWh off-peak (overnight rate), 3% annual inflation.

    Battery: Hoymiles HiBattery 1920 AC (HB-1920-AC-SV), 1.92 kWh usable capacity, LiFePO4 cells, AC-coupled, 87% round-trip efficiency, IP66, 6,000+ cycle life, 10-year warranty.

Battery arbitrage: Off-peak grid charging at overnight rates, peak discharge during the day. 365 days per year at full capacity (1.92 kWh). Solar generation is consumed directly by the household and does not charge the battery, leaving full battery capacity available for grid arbitrage year-round. Battery operates at 800 W maximum output, sufficient to offset household base load during peak hours. 87% round-trip efficiency.

Export: No export income is included in this projection.

Basis of calculation: Figures are modelled on a 400 W single-panel system with a 1.92 kWh battery.

    -

Battery arbitrage savings assume the customer is on a smart time-of-use tariff with off-peak overnight rates. Actual returns may be higher or lower than projected
depending on tariff availability and usage patterns. All figures are estimates based on the assumptions above and should not be considered as guaranteed
returns.

  • System: 2 x 465 W rigid solar panels (N-type monocrystalline TOPCon, dual glass), total 0.93 kWp. Microinverter: Hoymiles HMS-800-2WB (800 VA, 2 MPPT, 96.7% peak efficiency), one panel per MPPT input.

Orientation: Modelled at 40-degree tilt, azimuth -6 degrees (near due south), the optimal configuration for London. A ground, wall or balcony frame allows this angle to be set. Output will be lower at other orientations..

Specific yield: 1,100 kWh/kWp/year (PVGIS simulation for London at 40-degree tilt, azimuth -6 degrees, less a 3% allowance for soiling and real-world inverter efficiency, and a further 2% for microinverter clipping as 930 Wp of panels feed an 800 VA microinverter).

    Year 1 generation: 1,013 kWh.

Panel degradation: 1% in year 1, 0.4%/year thereafter (standard N-type TOPCon performance warranty).

Seasonal generation split: Winter 33% / Summer 67% (derived from PVGIS monthly output at 40-degree tilt for London).

Self-consumption rate: Winter 100% / Summer 85% (blended 90%). The battery stores midday summer surplus that would otherwise be unusable, raising on-site consumption well above an equivalent system without storage.

Annual consumption: 2,700 kWh (Ofgem typical medium household). Winter 60% / Summer 40%.

    Electricity tariff: 30 p/kWh peak (smart time-of-use daytime rate), 8 p/kWh off-peak (overnight rate), 3% annual inflation.

    Battery: Hoymiles HiBattery 1920 AC (HB-1920-AC-SV), 1.92 kWh usable capacity, LiFePO4 cells, AC-coupled, 87% round-trip efficiency, IP66, 6,000+ cycle life, 10-year warranty.

Battery arbitrage: Off-peak grid charging at overnight rates, peak discharge during the day. 180 winter days at full capacity (1.92 kWh) and 185 summer days at 50% capacity, as surplus solar charges part of the battery during summer daylight hours and that value is already counted in the self-consumption figure. Battery operates at 800 W maximum output, sufficient to offset household base load during peak hours. 87% round-trip efficiency.

Export: No export income is included in this projection.

    Basis of calculation: Figures are modelled on a 930 W (2 x 465 W) system with a 1.92 kWh battery.

    -

Battery arbitrage savings assume the customer is on a smart time-of-use tariff with off-peak overnight rates. Actual returns may be higher or lower than projected
depending on tariff availability and usage patterns. All figures are estimates based on the assumptions above and should not be considered as guaranteed
returns.

Electricity tariff: 25 p/kWh (Ofgem price cap, April 2026), 3% annual inflation assumed.

Actual returns may be higher or lower than projected depending on tariff changes and usage patterns. All figures are estimates based on the assumptions above
and should not be considered as guaranteed returns.
